One of the reasons I love traveling is that it gives me a chance to indulge in savoring new dishes .  It’s fantastic to just let go and dig in.   And to quote from Virginia Woolf “One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well.”

Unfortunately, over indulgence leads to  bloating, dehydration, headaches, or hangovers, and an increased susceptibility to getting sick. All of these things can cut short a well planned trip.  No one want to spent their vacation holed up in the toilet trying not to retch.

If you have food intolerance the best thing you can do for yourself is to note the foods you are allergic to.   We live in a global village hence, it’s so much easier to make good choices when it comes to what you choose to consume.

Here are some simple tips on how to eat healthy while you are on vacation.

Plan ahead.

Carry a food diary.  Or better yet, get one on play store.  It’s a good idea to know the itinerary so that you can know when you will have a break to take a few bites.  If the day is going to consist of taking bike rides down the trail and your blood sugar is a little low, you can carry small snacks such as nuts, seeds, hard-boiled eggs, firm fruits (like apples), veggies and hummus, or natural fruit-and-nut bars.  A bit of chocolate won’t hurt either. Aim for eating a little bit every couple of hours while in transit and while you’re out and about. You should avoid too much unhealthy snacking such as cookies since they would spike you will go on a sugar spike that will leave you tired.

Do your research.

Find out if there are restaurants near the place you are staying and what type of food they serve.  This is important if your food should be gluten free or you are a vegetarian. Most eateries don’t specify the ingredients that are used in the dish so it is best to always ask.  Remember, you deserve to have the best time of your life.

The best places to get fresh produce is from supermarkets.  If you are in Africa, then you are in luck because they have an open market where you can purchase the fruits at a much cheaper price.  It’ll be a good idea to have a local go with you though to prevent overcharging of goods if you are money conscience.  It’s a good idea to have some multi-vitamins stashed just in case.  Remember, a healthy body equals a healthy mind.

Eating fruits all the time may come as bore to some people especially if you have kids.  The best option is to have smoothies once in a while.  Not only are they delicious but you can jazz the flavours by throwing in a few recipes.

Stay hydrated.

Water is your friend.  Repeat.  Stay away from alcohol.   If you must drink then one glass should do the trick.   There is not much fun in a vacation if you are going to be passed out or nursing a hangover.

Sleep early, wake up refreshed.

I cannot stress this out enough.   Sleeping enables your tired body to mend itself and allow new cells to grow that keep you healthy.   Get eight hours of undisturbed sleep and you will be fine.
